Fragments of the Past uses a proprietary system called Cosmos, designed to guide narrators and players in recreating the ancient and evocative atmosphere of Askedoria. Conflicts are resolved by rolling a d10 or d100. Characters are defined by their Epithets, Passions, and Gifts, which tell their story and struggles, inspiring the plot and directly interacting with the game mechanics. A character could be a ‘Lotophagus,’ a ‘Fallen Prince of a distant Thalassocracy,’ an ‘Heir to an ancient warrior tradition,’ or ‘Possessed by Madness’. Lastly, Fortuna Points and Hybris Points measure the favor of the Immortal Gods and the extent of transgressions that characters inevitably commit during their ephemeral lives.
